Sixth- and fourth-place finishes in the last two Grand Prix (Italy and Catalonia) have catapulted Team LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow into sixth position in the MotoGP World Standings, pulling him ahead of Lorenzo and Dovizioso.
The British rider showed he has what it takes to compete with the champions at both Mugello and Montmelò with Team LCR, sponsored by flow-meter™, enjoying a great start to the season.
In Italy, Crutchlow started in eighth position and demonstrated great patience and determination to earn himself an incredible result, particularly given the grip problems he was having with the front of his Honda. He had been hoping to reach the podium, but instead chose to play a less aggressive game in order to finish the race and rack up vital championship points.
On the Montmelò circuit he placed fourth, just behind Rossi, Marquez and Lorenzo. Having started in the fourth row following a crash at the end of Q2, he managed to close the gap with the leaders and control his tyres despite the sweltering heat. “Without doubt it was a really good race for me and the team, who worked really hard all weekend”, he said after the race. “It’s a shame about the crash during qualifying which put me in the fourth row, but I think I did a good job both at the start and with the tyres. As always I was aiming for the podium but fourth is fine because we take home a lot of points for the standings.”.
The next race of the season is the Dutch TT on 1 July.
